Project Schoolroom Ministry
Project Schoolroom is a mission program of the Conference Board of Global Ministries of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist. Its very first venture was in Haiti which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest of the world. For years, the Methodist schools have provided a quality education with special teaching materials printed in Creole from the Methodist Print Shop.
The Mahomet United Methodist Church has embraced this ministry and has been sewing and stuffing schoolbags for the 78,000 needy children of Haiti and Liberia for many years. These bags are also used for children in need here in the United States.
Here is how it works! Our church members get together or individually sew bags. Our yearly goal has been 130 bags. Here is where you can find the schoolbag pattern.
Each child’s book bag is filled with:
For Student: - Suggested Shipping Donation $1.00
3 Spiral Notebooks (8" X 10 1/2") 70 to 80 pages
3 Stick-style Pens (blue or black)
3 Pencils (unsharpened)
1 Pencil Sharpener
1 Pink Eraser (1" x 2")
1 Ruler (12") (with *metric)
1 Protractor (6") (with *metric)
1 Box (24) of Crayola Crayons (Place box in a zip closure
bag. Please note that Crayola Crayons do not
melt as easily.)
1 Pair of blunt School Scissors
The summer when the school sales begin is a great time to purchase supplies to fill the bags. We work to have all of these bags made and the supplies in them before the beginning of the school year. Then the shipping monies are collected and they go to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, IL.
What a blessing this is to the children of Haiti and Liberia!
